Frameworks in ISMS.online provide a structured starting point for creating projects that support repeatable, outcome-driven work. They help ensure consistency and alignment with recognised standards, internal policies, or business processes.

Why Use a Framework?

Frameworks are particularly useful when you want to follow a defined set of requirements or best practices. For instance:

  • You may use a framework aligned with an information security standard such as NIST. When you create a project from that framework, it will present the relevant requirements and offer space to document how you meet them—similar to the built-in ISO 27001 Policies and Controls Project.
  • Frameworks can also support internal operations. For example, HR-related frameworks like Recruitment or Induction can guide hiring managers through key tasks aligned with Section A.7 of the ISO/IEC 27002 Annex. These frameworks help ensure that steps such as background checks, system access setup, and security policy inductions are completed in line with your organisation’s standards.

Creating a Project Using a Framework

Framework-based projects are ideal for collaborative, repeatable work with colleagues or external partners.

To get started:

  • Select ‘All work’ from the Work menu.
  • Click the ‘Create new’ button.
  • Choose ‘Project’ as the type of work you want to create, then click ‘Create’.
  • You’ll be presented with a list of available frameworks, along with a search bar to help you locate specific ones—such as “ISO 27001”.

Frameworks created by your organisation will appear at the top of the list. Frameworks developed by ISMS.online or trusted partners will appear below. Use the search function to quickly locate relevant options (e.g. searching for “recruitment” will display associated HR frameworks).

Tip:

Hover over a framework name to see a short description, including whether it comes with pre-loaded notes, documents, or tasks.

When you’re ready, click on a framework to begin setting up your new project.

Customising the Project

Once your project is created, you’ll find it populated with Phases, Deliverables, and Activities based on the selected framework. While these are designed to give you a head start, you can fully customise the structure to meet your specific needs:

  • Add, edit, or remove phases and tasks
  • Modify existing content to reflect your organisation's language and processes
  • Create new activities as needed

To learn more about adjusting your project layout, see our guide to editing the Project structure here.

Frameworks help simplify the process of creating structured, consistent projects that align with both industry standards and internal processes. If you need assistance or have questions about using frameworks, feel free to reach out to our support team.
